CONTINUATIONS

Hawthorn Contemporary, Milwaukee, WI

Currently on view until April 25, 2026

"Drawing upon the figure of the Arhat in Buddhism as a contemporary analogy for liminality, hybridity, and spirituality, CONTINUATIONS reflects on the long umbilical histories of aesthetics and ascetics... amidst Zhu’s compositions churning of samsara—the cycle of death and rebirth to which life in the material world is bound—each Arhat sits as a constant embodied presence through meditation, amidst an ever-changing world."

Strangers in Cyclicity in The Cormorant    review by Annie Raab

"Relief surfaces hover between architecture and organism, where growth and decay function as parallel movements and each surface behaves like soil. Merging the emotional register of painting with the tactile immediacy of sculptural objects, Zhu constructs substrates from pigment, circuitry, vine, and cast fragments—forms that serve simultaneously as image and relic."

A Stage Within a Stage, DIMIN, NYC, 2023

"Inspired by his own experiences with art in religious spaces, Zhu is interested in the power of scale to influence the viewer’s body, allowing the artwork to unite the effects of architecture, storytelling and iconography."

ART SPIEL

Alchemy of Mood and Matter, Harkawik Gallery, NYC, 2022

"I look to spaces of worship to learn how knowledge and worldviews can be transmitted through visual experiences, physical objects, and spaces... I integrate these lessons to share ideas on the porous nature of mind, matter, body, and spirit. In this way, my art examines how beliefs can travel and materialize between objects and people."
